South West England is a natural home for renewable energy. It has the best climate in the UK, and the highest levels of solar radiation. There are strong areas of wind resources in all seven of our counties and research suggests the region has over 1000 MW of untapped wind energy resource. The South West also has one of the largest woodland resources in the country, and the potential to generate substantial amounts of renewable energy from its wave and tidal resources.
Skilled and Productive Workforce
Over 27% of the workforce have degrees and 24% of the population are in job-related training. We also enjoy the UK’s highest rates of relocation of professionally qualified people. Our workforce is highly motivated, for example advanced engineering staff are 31% more productive than their peers in the rest of the UK. It is no wonder therefore, that the region also has the highest survival rate of businesses in Britain.
Quality of Life
The 2005 Wellbeing@Work survey found that South West based workers and bosses enjoy the highest levels of well-being in the UK. With the daily commute, only 22 minutes on average, there is plenty of time to relax and enjoy the coasts, moors and national parks for which the South West is famous. |
